Who can apply ?
A Disabled Facilities Grant is available to anyone living with a disability whose home needs adaptations to support their safety, independence, or ability to receive care. The grant is not limited by age — both adults and children with disabilities may qualify. Applications can be made by the disabled person themselves, a family member, or their legal representative.

You can apply whether you are a homeowner, private tenant, housing association tenant, or living with family. What matters most is that the adaptations are necessary and appropriate for your needs, and that the works are reasonable and practical to carry out in the property. For tenants, your landlord must give permission, but they cannot unreasonably refuse essential adaptations.

DFG funding is means-tested for adults, which means your income and savings are considered when deciding how much you may need to contribute toward the cost of the works. However, children’s applications are not means-tested if the disabled child or young person is under 19 years of age. In most cases, the full cost of eligible works — that is, the cost of the adaptations — can be funded through the grant, provided the required works do not exceed the statutory maximum of £30,000.
Where adaptations exceed £30,000, additional financial support may be available through discretionary top-up funding, subject to availability. However, It is important to note that discretionary funding must clearly demonstrate that not providing the extra support would likely lead to new or additional Adult Social Care, care costs in the short to medium term. This is a key consideration when deciding upon the absolute necessity for need for discretional funding.

Eligibility
To be eligible, the proposed adaptations must meet at least one of the statutory purposes outlined in the Housing Grants, Construction and Regeneration Act 1996 Section 23 — such as improving access, ensuring safe movement around the home, facilitating essential care, or providing suitable bathing or sleeping facilities. An Occupational Therapist or one of our team's qualified trusted assessors will need to complete a needs assessment in your home to confirm what adaptations are required.
